About this Event

Fresh air. Good company. Proper hills.

Fresh Air. Good Company. Proper Hills.

Join Nick from @hikinggays26 for a full day out of the city — the Surrey Hills, done properly. We'll walk from Leatherhead to Box Hill, taking in the climbs, the views, and each other's company along the way.

Meet at London Victoria @ 9am for the 09:41 to Leatherhead (arriving 10:32), then it's about 3.5 hours on foot at a comfortable ~4km/h pace, finishing at Box Hill & Westhumble station around 3:30–4pm. Expect a moderate route with some proper hilly climbs and descents — bring walking boots or hiking trainers, a waterproof jacket, and thermal layers, and check the forecast the night before since Surrey weather has a mind of its own.

Pack your lunch and at least 2 litres of water. Trains cost around £16 without a railcard, or £11 with a Network Railcard.

As this is an outdoor activity with some physical exertion involved, all participants will need to sign a waiver before joining the hike. This will be sent ahead of the day and takes two minutes to complete.

But like all Friend of Dorothy events, this isn't just about the hike.

It's about creating spaces where gay, bi, trans, non-binary and queer people can meet, talk and form real connections outside of apps and bars. Hours of walking side by side is one of the easiest ways there is to actually get to know someone, no headphones, no distractions, just conversation and the hills.

Scared to come alone?

Most of our guys showed up solo too

It's the most common worry we hear. Here's how we make sure first-timers leave feeling like they belong.

1

You won't be the only solo guy

More than 60% of attendees come alone. The room is built for it.

2

We greet you at the door

Tell us it's your first time and we'll introduce you to people right away.

3

The activity does the work

You don't have to make small talk from cold.

4

Leave when you want

Stay for the social or head home early. Both are normal.

Your host on the night: Nick (@hikinggays26). They'll be at the door from doors-open. Message the WhatsApp group if you're running late or can't find us.

Finally a gay event where I felt seen

I'm 47 and most gay events make me feel ancient. This one had every type of guy — single, coupled, all ages.

My first gay event ever

Was so nervous to come alone. Within 10 minutes someone introduced themselves at the bar.

Worth every penny (which is barely any)

£10 for a line-up that would cost £40 anywhere else, plus a drink and a gift bag.
