Why We Launched the Friend of Dorothy Podcast
At Friend of Dorothy, our mission is to support gay wellness in every form—mental, sexual, emotional, and physical. Wellness isn’t just about what you put in your body, but also about the conversations you have, the stories you hear, and the connections you build.
That’s why we created the Friend of Dorothy Podcast—a space to dive deeper into gay culture, identity, and community. Each episode, we talk to entrepreneurs, doctors, therapists, artists, beauty bloggers, sex educators, and more, to learn from their personal journeys and professional expertise. Our goal is to explore what it truly means to thrive as a queer person today—and how we can support each other in that journey.
Episode One: A Conversation with Alex Gede
In our debut episode, we sit down with Alex Gede, whose story is a powerful reflection of courage, growth, and authenticity.
Alex’s journey began in Nigeria, where rigid societal norms and religious expectations made it difficult to explore his sexuality. In 2007, he moved to the UK to pursue a master’s degree, which marked a turning point in his life. But it wasn’t until 2018 that he fully came to terms with his identity as a gay man.
He speaks candidly about the internal conflicts, the fear of rejection, and the long process of unlearning shame. One pivotal moment came when he posted a YouTube video about his sexuality—his way of coming out publicly, even though he hadn’t directly spoken to his parents about it. That video changed everything, triggering tension within his family, but also opening the door to long-overdue conversations.
We also talk about his marriage to a woman, the process of coming out to his ex-wife, and how they worked together to maintain a loving and stable environment for their children. Alex reflects deeply on fatherhood, describing his kids as his pride and his greatest source of strength. Their support, he says, has been unwavering.
After his marriage ended, Alex embraced the gay community more fully—experimenting with dating apps, joining gay gamer groups, and engaging in online queer spaces where he felt seen and safe. He also leaned into his creative side, launching fashion ventures like Club Seven—brands that speak to comfort, confidence, and queer joy.
We also explore his thoughts on representation, societal pressures, and why it’s so important to normalize diverse stories within our own communities.
Alex’s episode is heartfelt, honest, and deeply inspiring—a reminder that the path to self-acceptance may not be linear, but it’s always worth walking.
